Driving up to Driggs we passed through Craters of the Moon National Park. This is unusual in that it was a volcanic extrusion from fissures in the ground rather than volcanic eruptions from a cone. Puts the current eruption in Hawaii Big Island into perspective. This extrusion extended for about 125 miles in length, whereas the current eruption has extended half a mile into the sea (but is devastating in this age)! An interesting display in the visitor centre showed how the hot spot had moved up the American Rift Valley from the Twin Peaks area and through to Yellowstone where it is now and how, over millennia, numerous eruptions have occurred.
For all of that it was not a landscape that either of us wanted to explore, enough to drive through and enjoy the contrast with the surrounding spring green of the sage bush.
Our time in Driggs although short was well spent. We sorted out all our admin, had a great time catching up with Clayton and enjoyed being in the area again. Were glad however that we had decided against the Teton Crest Trail as there was still far too much snow around. Would have been totally unmanageable. Picked up the snow shoes but not sure that they will get an outing!
Drove up on Monday and then back on Wednesday. During which time I manged to pick up a vile head cold. Thursday was spent largely in bed whilst Mike did various chores. Did find a nice ‘free’ site close to the NRA headquarters where Mike sorted out our backpacking kit and I spent more time sleeping!
