Morning Hike from Dalseter

Morning Hike from Dalseter

The weather conditions continued to be tough today, strong winds and snow. GB2 offered some different training sessions, skating and intro to BC skiing. We thought about the latter but decided that as we were spending the following week at Venebu on an Intro to Off Track course we should leave it till then. Given how lacking the instruction was at Venebu with hindsight that was probably not the right decision but we were not to know! So Mike and I decided that we would give our muscles a break and go for a hike along the trails we are familiar with from skiing this week. We didn’t need snowshoes as we were not planning on going off the prepared trails which were well packed.

Really enjoyed this different day, my muscles certainly did. Although sections round the Langtjonna lake were quite windy for the most part we took a route through the woods and were well protected. Stopping off in the mountain cabin with the fire going was very welcome for our mid morning break. Lots of others had the same idea so it was very convivial being in there and listening to others chat.

A short day as we headed back to the hotel for their excellent lunch and in the afternoon I went for a long swim followed by a sauna. After dinner today Greta put on a slide show showcasing how the environment round the hotel changes with the seasons. She had some excellent photos of the Northern Lights. The area in the summer looks very bleak and I am not sure it would be high on my list of places to visit. Was surprised that the snow typically does not start to lay and settle until December so it is really quite a short season as they shut after Easter and only reopen for 3 months over the summer.

The group is starting to whittle down as this is the last week for GB2 and so we have people leaving every day but no new joiners. Reminds me of a long drawn out farewell!
