Jax outside the café in Sallion

We did this 41km /47 km bike ride twice this week once on the 10th, into a fairly stiff breeze (or so it felt to us) and once on Friday 13th in perfect conditions. It is a lovely training ride, we drive down to Aproz, and then get on the bikes to cycle along a quiet road along the Rhône to Riddes, where we stop for a coffee at the ‘duck’ café.

It’s then uphill (c.150m) to Chamoson, first time Mike left his sunglasses at the spot of shade we stopped in and we were halfway down the hill to Leytron before he realised and we had to climb back up to (successfully ) retrieve them. The good news is that from Chamson it is downhill to Leytron and then to Saillon before the (very steep) climb up to the castle which sits above the town. Found a lovely cafe in the heart of the old quarter. Food looks good but so far we have only had beers there!

From the castle square it is a nice ride back along the river to Aproz, both times we have had the wind behind us which is very nice.

On Friday decided to look for a replacement pair of boots as my Mammut boots have had a serious sole failure (hopefully the company will agree that it was a manufacturing fault) so, hot and a tad smelly, we went to look for a replacement pair of hiking shoes. Very happy with my Sportiva hiking shoes in SA and was able to get something equivalent from là haut sports de montage in Sion. Very happy girlie.

Postscript: On Bob’s last morning with us we decided to visit the Borg (ruined watchtower) at Sallion. We were able to climb up inside the tower which was fantastic. So nice that a monument has not been vandalised in recent times, no rubbish and no fee to enter! Very picturesque and nice that although we have been visiting here for well over a decade we still find new places to explore and visit.
