Descent from the Sustan Pass towards Gloshenwn
We spent a lot of time thinking about where we would go for our first bike tour this year. One idea was to go up to Zermatt on the train and cycle back down to Sion. Alternatively we could go in the other direction and cycle from the flat to Lake Geneva. However as the weather looked fantastic we decided to head to Oberwald and then cycle over the Grimsel and the Susten Passes to Gloshenwn before getting the train back to Oberwald.
We decided to stay in Rhonequelle, where we stayed last year, for the first night to make the climb over the Grimsel pass a little shorter. Unfortunately after making the booking I accidentally cancelled it (dummy!!) Thought I might have been able to get it reinstated but language is a bit of a challenge when you don’t speak German in this neck of the woods. Mike suggested we drive up there first to check out the position. Very glad we did as we weren’t booked in. Anyway the lady on reception was very helpful rang up her boss and although they didn’t have any room there was a flat they own down in Oberwald which they let us use instead. Perfect solution.
We had arrived early afternoon, so after settling into the flat – not difficult when all you have is panniers – and having our picnic lunch on the balcony we headed off for an easy ride. We did one of our favourites down the valley on the summer bike paths to Geschinen where we stopped at a cafe before heading back. Lovely sitting in the deck chairs looking over the valley, relaxing and people watching. In the evening we drove back up to the hotel for dinner. Tomorrow we will head off on our 2 day tour stopping back at Rhonequelle for breakfast.
Anyway it has all turned out for the best. Looking forward to the next 2 days and exploring new vistas.
