Jax with Pick Up in St. George North

Our first stop off on our US winter vacation was to Bryce NP. A long standing bucket list item has been to experience Bryce in the winter. So we made our travel plans to fly into Las Vegas, not the closest airport to ski slopes (!) and wend our way North.

I was a bit concerned about the impact of the government shutdown on immigration, however, it was one of the fastest entries to the States I have had so all good there.
Second worry had been the vehicle we were hiring, would our skis fit and how would it handle the snow. At the last minute I found an offer for a RAV4 with a ski rack, must have been a misprint as the rental desk said no chance! They don’t provide any ski racks on their cars. However, they were very helpful, upgraded us to a Pick up truck and the additional cost was equal to the optional extras we didn’t need (ski rack and they don’t change for additional drivers). Result, much happier with a 4WD. Other option had been a people carrier which Mike was not at all convinced by. Also managed to buy a cover for the back at a heavily discounted price – small defects, just hope when it arrives that they are minor!

Spent the night in an airport hotel which was very convenient and decided to split the drive to Bryce into 2 days given we expected to suffer from jet lag. Right decision. 2nd night we spent in North George, did some shopping and had an excellent meal in a local Thai restaurant.

Short drive to Bryce the next morning and we both enjoyed the drive up as it was a lovely day and we decided to take the scenic route. Plenty of snow on a high plateau where snowmobiles were having fun.
