Today we decided to head up to the Goms area at the head of the Valais, where we have gone XCountry skiing in the past to see what the trails look like when not covered in snow. The cycle route largely takes the same path as the XC trail.

Picked up a couple of croissants from the bakery in the village to have with a coffee as we drove up to Niederwald, trying not to litter the car with crumbs and after changing in the Train Station restroom were ready to go by 9.30. Pretty good going.

Mike at Biel

We had decided to cycle ‘up’ the valley in the morning so that we would have more of a downhill ride in the afternoon when the wind tends to start to build and would be working against us. The first section of the ride was quite hard, especially after yesterday, and I was very ready an hour later for my late breakfast of fruit when I (mistakenly) saw a steep uphill section that I really did not want to tackle. Fortunately Mike was a better navigator than me! And we headed off on a gentle track along the river!.

Jacqui coming into Reckingen

From this point the route was much easier with a gentle gradient, a fun section through the woods on a single track trail alongside the river and passing through various campgrounds. Had a really nice coffee in Altsaage, where we just caught the start of an accordion player performing for a private party before we headed off up the valley to Oberwald and lunch at the Hotel Alpenhof. New discovery and I would go back. I had Onion soup which was excellent and Mike had some very tasty beef carpaccio followed by Apple Strudel. The owner was very cheerful, he had his young daughter helping out and made us very welcome.

Enjoyed our cycle back, and apart from one very steep short section (when I got off and pushed) managed the ups very well. Back home now looking forward to ribs on the new BBQ.
