We had planned on celebrating Mike’s birthday with a cycle trip in The Alsace, however, looking at the weather and the ongoing heatwave we decided to bring the trip forward a week, in case the weather broke. Found a hotel in Strausbourg (Hotel Athena and Spa) which critically: has air-con, a pool and is on the tram line to get into the old town.
The drive across from Switzerland went well and we arrived just after lunch. Could not check in so to walked to Carfour to pick up a cycling top for Mike  and pair of bottoms for me which we had ordered. Unfortunately the top was too small for Mike (I have found it a useful home) so we decided to try and find something else locally. Got the tram into the old town, heaving with people and very hot so we made a quick exit and found a Decathlon store on the tram line our hotel is on where we could resupply.
Had a lovely dinner in the hotel restaurant, were both dehydrated as it is so hot and we had not been drinking enough water so the gin went right to our heads and we were both quite tidily after the bottle of wine which followed. Glad all we had to do was wend our way back to our room.
See below for links to the four cycle trips we did, including maps, trail descriptions (provided by the tourist board) and our memories of the rides
  • Friday Marne Rhine Canal  (eastwards) ride 1
  • Saturday Saverne Marmoutier Loop (anti-clockwise to get the climb done in the cool) ride 2
  • Sunday Piste des Forts (cut down ride so we could enjoy a special meal out) ride 3
  • Monday Wissembourg Seltz Rhine loop (easily the hottest day of our mini-break so time to head home) ride 4
